Playa Escondida, Fajardo: The Hidden Beach at the End of the Trail
Playa Escondida means "hidden beach," and the name fits. There's no road to it. You reach it on foot, on a short trail through the coastal forest from the far end of Seven Seas beach.
Your reward: golden sand, a quieter shoreline and views across the water toward El Yunque and the Luquillo coast. Here's how to do it like a local.
Start at Seven Seas
Seven Seas is Fajardo's public balneario, run by the Municipality of Fajardo. It's a calm, family-friendly beach, and it's the only beach in Fajardo with lifeguards. Park here, use the facilities, and walk to the far end of the beach, where the trail begins. Parking is $5: take a ticket when you drive in, pay at the automatic pay station by the bathrooms and showers before you leave, and scan your validated ticket at the exit.
The trail
About 15 to 20 minutes of easy walking from the far corner of Seven Seas.
Easy to moderate. It's a forest path, so expect roots, uneven ground and some mud after rain.
Wear real shoes or sturdy sandals, not flip-flops.
Go in the morning. It's cooler, the light is beautiful and the beach is quieter.
What to bring
Plenty of water. There's nothing to buy once you leave Seven Seas.
Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and bug repellent for the trail.
Snacks and a bag for your trash. Carry out everything you bring in.
A charged phone, and tell someone where you're going.
Where to eat
The House of Pastelillos is right inside the Seven Seas balneario, known for its pastelillos (turnovers) with meat, seafood and chicken fillings. Grab a bite before or after the hike.
Swim safe
Playa Escondida has no lifeguards. Seven Seas is the only beach in Fajardo with lifeguards.
Stay near shore and never swim alone. If the water looks rough, just enjoy the view from the sand.
Follow the flags at Seven Seas and ask the lifeguards about conditions before you head out on the trail.
Check the sea before you go on Swim Safe PR (swimsafepr.com) for rip currents and surf.
Watch kids closely and protect the reef: don't stand on or touch the coral.
Leave it hidden (and clean)
Part of what makes Playa Escondida special is that it still feels wild. Pack out your trash, keep the music low and leave the shells, plants and animals where you found them.
